Retrospective Starfish

One of the main objectives of a computer project is the feedback, not only the system but also the very process of development or implementation, a task force that draws from their successes and failures is a Working Team continuous improvement. A useful tool for retrospective, feedback and continuous improvement is one that arises from Scrum, Retrospective Estrella de Mar (Starfish Retrospective).

The Retrospective Starfish is a board divided into 5 equal parts or categories that contain suggestions of individual members of the Task Force in order to improve the experience.

In my opinion, this method has three major virtues, on the one hand, is graphical, which is easy to interpret and understand, the human being is primarily visual (as in 'a picture is worth a thousand words' is not merely a whim), on the other hand, split the back in 5 choices, perfect binary model advantages and disadvantages.

• Begin to make is the category in which innovation is the instance in which the Task Force or the managers propose new ideas, either because things are not quite right, because can improve or just to keep the team spirit up high. It may propose changes in methodology, tools that simplify work, new tactics or corporate strategies, schedule changes, frequency of meetings, new skills, etc.

Over is the next instance to 'start doing', any innovation that has proved successful in its initial stage deserves be increased, but it can also happen to have passed the task of 'continue' for instance 'under' has proven to be a bad decision and then increase, or one that was categorized as 'continue' has become more important for a change of context.

• Continue to is the stage at which they enter activities that are well entrenched, that are productive and are balanced, the Team shall include, in this instance, all activities, technologies, tools and methodologies they are demonstrably good for the project and require no further attention.

• Less , here are hosted practices that have not met expectations, those of which one is not completely sure there who ignore them and pretend to put the focus on them either to refine, replaced by similar or discard them at a future meeting. They can also come from a 'more' that has not resulted in significant improvement.

• Stop doing corresponds to those activities that were not being productive, they failed to add enough value to the process or just those that will be replaced by more efficient. It can also happen they are activities that have completed their life cycle or that has changed the context of the project for which were useful.

While Retrospective Starfish was created by Scrum for IT projects, is useful for feedback on any project and, I mean a project as any set of activities or practices carried place in a business during a defined time range and you can still be useful to refine or refocus the objectives or strategy of the entire company or institution.

Finally, for the retrospective to be effective, must review meetings performed on a weekly to monthly, depending on the dynamics of the project we are evaluating, do not forget that no work should be carried out unproductive or useless for a long time and delay implementation of improvements that can reduce time, effort or cost.
